Consumers, including Alameda County residents and managers of public use landscapes, are becoming aware of the benefits of Bay-Friendly Landscaping.  Local municipalities are encouraging the design, construction and maintenance of landscapes in both the public and private sector.  In fact, the cities in Alameda County have implemented ordinances that now require all new civic landscapes over a certain size to meet Bay-Friendly standards. (See more about ordinances here) With this increased interest has come an increased need for trained and experienced Bay-Friendly Design Professionals.

The Bay-Friendly Training and Qualification for Designing New Landscapes program has been developed with the input of innovative landscape design professionals from around the Bay. It is based upon the 7 Bay-Friendly Landscape principles and 55 practices described in Bay-Friendly Landscape Guidelines: Sustainable Practices for the Landscape Professional and will offered:

You must attend all four classes and pass a final exam to become a Bay-Friendly Qualified  Professional for Designing New Landscapes.

  • Class 1: Tuesday October 19, 2010
     from 8:30 – 4:30
  • Class 2: Tuesday, October 26, 2010
     from 8:30 – 4:30
  • Class 3: Tuesday, November 2, 2010
     from 8:30 – 4:30
  • Class 4: Thursday, November 4, 2010
     from 9 am – 12 noon  

The program will enhance the participant’s knowledge of the Bay-Friendly principles and the many practices that allow professional landscapers to offer profitable and environmentally sound landscaping designs.  It will provide landscape design professionals who work in Alameda County and the Bay Area with:

  • studentsKnowledge of Bay-Friendly Landscaping as an ecologically based, holistic approach to the management of urban landscapes.
  • An understanding of the value of landscaping within the context of the SF Bay ecosystem.
  • Hand’s on experience with many cutting edge applications such as sheet mulching
  • Information on the Bay-Friendly Landscape resources, including how to use the Scorecards for meeting standards in designing Bay-Friendly Rated civic, commercial, multifamily and new home landscapes
  • Public recognition of their training and knowledge and a competitive advantage in the professional landscape design marketplace.
  • Support for expanding their business to offer BFL Design services and to communicate to their clients about Bay-Friendly landscaping.

As a Bay-Friendly Qualified Landscape Design Professional you will be able to provide many benefits to the residents and communities of the Bay-Area by:

  • Reducing the waste stream.
  • Encouraging the conservation of water, soil, energy and other natural resources.
  • Minimizing stormwater runoff and its impacts
  • Protecting air and water quality.

Please note: if you are a Bay-Friendly Qualified Maintenance professional and also offer design services, you are required to attend the Design training and meet the requirements of that program to be identified as a Bay-Friendly Qualified Design professional.
