The Zero Net Energy Center

The Zero Net Energy Center (ZNEC) in San Leandro is a partnership of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 595 and the Northern California National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). Completed in 2013 as a retrofit of an outdated commercial building, the 46,000-square-foot facility is the largest building in California that generates enough renewable energy on-site to meet its own electricity demand. ZNEC has reduced energy use by 75% compared to a similar sized commercial building, through technology, advanced designs and innovative construction methods. As a result, the facility prevents 175 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The building’s renewable energy systems and state-of-the-art efficiency features serve as hands-on models for the Center’s electrical industry training programs. ZNEC serves as a scalable model for other IBEW-NECA training centers across the country.
